I’ll admit, I have rarely done detailed character sketches in the past. I have it all in my head. But sometimes it does help to have it all written out- the character’s life story, their favorite things, quirks, dreams, fears…. I think it really can help an author write a multi dimentional character that readers love and relate too.
But if a written description is great…what about a character “sketch” of photos???
Recently I wrote a post on my own blog about the newest craze to hit the internet: Pinterest. One commenter told me she had a personal account, but just couldn’t get into it. Then she started a new account…and uses it just for gathering photos for her characters. Favorite things, quotes, music, clothes..anything that fit the character. I think this is a fantastic idea! I think I’m going to start a board for each of my characters, even ones from stories already published, and pin photos of things that are so them.
I can see it used as marketing tool too. A fun way to really let your readers get to know your characters. I can pick out things that remind me of certain parts of the book and pin them with a little description.
So, do you Pinterest? Love it? Hate it? What do you think about using it for a character sketch?? Stop by my pins if you get a chance!
I never thought of doing this!! I don’t do character scketches either, but I’ll hang onto a picture if I see one that reminds me of the character. Lke with one of my WIP Westerns, my hero has a Special Forces tat… I have that photo and link where I found it saved in One Note. But Pinterest might have it’s uses, too, because it’s public.
Thanks for sharing!
