Hump Day Hook–Get off my land.

Published January 16, 2013 by Sandra Sookoo

It’s time for Hump Day Hook–a small group of authors sharing a paragraph of a book they’re working on or a new release coming soon.

Today I’m sharing a snippet from a brand new short story that released today. It’s a sensual historical romance that takes place in the Civil War era. It also has paranormal elements and is a short tie-in with my Wolfish series, called A WOLFISH VALENTINE. It’s put out by Sybarite Seductions.

In this snippet, the heroine, Mary, has just opened her front door to two soldiers. One is demanding the use of her land and everything on it.

AWolfishValentine_Final-smlThe soldier’s face twisted into a mask of annoyance. “Now, look here, ma’am—”

“No. You listen to me.” Mary narrowed her gaze and took a step forward, barely stifling a chuckle when the man hastily retreated a step. “This war has already claimed my husband. It’s got all my menfolk in the field. God only knows if they’ll come back alive. I’ll be damned before I let it take what precious little the rest of us have, especially for the Confederacy. In this house, we support the North.” She raised the rolling pin to drive home her point. “Take your Southern asses off this porch.”

Here’s the blurb:

Mary Hoffman lost her husband in the War Between the States. Now the rest of her menfolk are off fighting for the North, leaving her behind to defend the homestead and her family—as well as guard her furry secret. Yet as soon as she meets Confederate Captain Marshall Fortner, her wolfish side urges her to trust him.

Captain Marshall Fortner, a surgeon traveling with his infantry unit from Georgia, is trying to keep peace between Mary and his unit, which wants her land to set up camp and regroup. Though they’re on opposite sides of the war, something about her resonates deep within him.

On Valentine’s Day, duty and uncertainty lose to trust and need.
