Hump Day Hook–remember the manners

Published January 23, 2013 by Sandra Sookoo

It’s time for Hump Day Hook–a small group of authors sharing a paragraph of a book they’re working on or a new release coming soon.

Today I’m sharing a snippet from A WOLFISH VALENTINE. This is a bit of the first meeting between Mary and the hero, Captain Fortner. You can purchase this book for under two bucks at Amazon and All Romance e-books.

AWolfishValentine_Final-smlA flicker of amusement lit Captain Fortner’s eyes. A half-smile tugged at one corner of his sensual mouth. “The standard procedure is for you to tell me your name. It makes me uncomfortable to converse with a stranger.”

“What difference will it make? You’re still going to move your troops onto my land and take what you want from my farm.” Mary scrambled to retain the anger she had when she’d opened the door, but the captain’s twinkling blue eyes disarmed her. She continued to hold his hand, unable or unwilling to let go.

Here’s the blurb:

Mary Hoffman lost her husband in the War Between the States. Now the rest of her menfolk are off fighting for the North, leaving her behind to defend the homestead and her family—as well as guard her furry secret. Yet as soon as she meets Confederate Captain Marshall Fortner, her wolfish side urges her to trust him.

Captain Marshall Fortner, a surgeon traveling with his infantry unit from Georgia, is trying to keep peace between Mary and his unit, which wants her land to set up camp and regroup. Though they’re on opposite sides of the war, something about her resonates deep within him.

On Valentine’s Day, duty and uncertainty lose to trust and need.
